Trinidad and Tobago senior women footballers secure a place in July’s W CONCACAF Championship and final round of qualifiers towards the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023.

This comes after T&T managed a 2-2 draw with Guyana last evening in the top of Group F showdown.

In front of a huge turnout at the Dwight Yorke stadium, the Soca princesses managed to equalize twice courtesy Asha James from the spot and Lauryn Hutchinson scoring late on to ensure their berth in the W Championship.

Guyana opened the scoring in the latter stages of the first half following a spill from goal keeper Kimika Forbes who failed to capture a ball whipped in from a Guyanese right sided free kick before Guyanese Sydney Cummings responded and knocked the ball over the line in the 41st minute.

The goal stunned the home team who missed the target on a number of occasions in the early moments of the game.

Guyana seemed to be more physically up for the challenge especially for the period leading up their first goal.

However, just as the second half commenced, midfield maestro Asha James was able to level the score from the penalty spot in the 48th minute after the skillful Mariah Francis Serrant was brought down in the area.

T&T enjoyed some good spells for just about 20 minutes afterwards with a Francis Serrant long range shot rocking the cross bar among the sparks for the ladies in red.

The Guyanese team filled with a majority of North American and British players however, started to trouble T&T’s defensive set up, winning a number of fouls before eventually registering a second goal from a set piece in the 81st minute.

Cummings registered Guyana’s and her second goal for the match courtesy a blunder from Forbes who misread the ball from a soft free kick.

Kenwyne Jones’ ladies however, showed resilience and were rewarded as substitute Hutchinson tapped the ball over the line in the 89th minute to book their spot into the Championship as group leaders.

T&T’s focus would now switch to the eight team tournament between July 4-18 in Mexico which also provides a route for CONCACAF teams to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.
