KINGSTON, Jamaica. —Jamaica has made the Gold Cup final twice in the last three occasions, an amazing feat when you think about it. Jamaica made the final in 2015 but were defeated by Mexico in a one sided match that ended 3-1. In 2017, their opponents were USA where they also lost. This match however, was a much closer encounter with Jamaica having many opportunities to take the title. In 2019, Jamaica found themselves being eliminated by USA but this time in the Semi Final round.
A team from the Caribbean has never won the Gold Cup before with Jamaica having the best record out of all the teams represented by the Caribbean Football Union. Before the start of Gold Cup 2023, it was stated that Jamaica has the highest % out of all Caribbean teams to win the title. The Reggae Boyz are a well stacked team with their squad consisting of Seven Premier League players bringing that added quality to the team. The only local based player is Dujuan Richards of Phoenix Football Academy who recently signed for Chelsea FC in the Premier League.
Two more matches stand between Jamaica and lifting the Gold Cup trophy for the first time ever. In their next match, they will be playing one of CONCACAF’s Powerhouses, Mexico. In their most recent encounters in 2022 and 2023, the matches ended 1-1 and 2-2. In these matches, Jamaica were without the likes of Aston Villa’s Leon Bailey, West Ham’s Michail Antonio and Everton’s Demarai Gray, these three have been very influential in the team’s performance at this Gold Cup.
